2019 George Stewart Memorial Finalists

Bowls@Club Windang March Newsletter

WELCOME TO THE MARCH  EDITION OF OUR 2021 NEWSLETTER  – Bowls@Club Windang.

There’s been a lot of bowls during March and there’s plenty more to come!

2021 Pennants has commenced, Zone Championships completed, Our 2021 Mixed Pairs Champions have also been decided. There’s also been a lot of wash outs due to the amount of rain in March which has led to several events being rescheduled.

PENNANTS

Four rounds were scheduled in March. Round 3 was a total washout. All Round 3 games will be played on Sunday 18th April, straight after Round 6. Make sure you let our Selectors know if you’re not available!

GRADE 2 – ROUND 5 – SATURDAY 10TH APRIL AT DAPTO CITIZENS – 9:30AM START TIME.

I think we can all agree it’s been a very shaky start to the 2021 season, but it’s the same old story. “The teams look strong on paper”!

However, things start to get difficult when you throw an opposition into the mix and they’re trying just as hard, or even harder to take those points home!

IT’S SO SIMPLE BOWLERS…… YOU’VE GOT TO HAVE BOWLS IN THE HEAD!

ZONE EVENTS

A fantastic effort by our bowlers this year in the Zone Pairs and Singles Events.

Dave Tyrrell and Daniel Davies making it to the Semi Finals of the Zone Open Pairs Championship. Their opposition (and eventual winners of the event), Brendan Aquilina and Lee Stinson (Warilla) proving too strong for Dave & Daniel.

Dave Tyrrell also making it to the Semi Final of the Zone Open Singles at Towradgi only to be bundled out by Adam Martin (Towradgi).

Paul Cable was out to get a triple title in the Zone Reserve Singles held at Windang. And that he did! Paul overcame a tough opposition in Noel Stopher (Warilla) taking out the Championship 31 -25.

Congratulations to all bowlers for representing Club Windang and on behalf of everyone I’d like to wish Paul Cable all the best at the upcoming State Championships in August at Ettalong.

JUNIORS

The Illawarra Zone 16 Junior Championships are to commence Monday 12th April. Our Juniors participating in all three disciplines are Daniel and Zoe Davies, and Blake Perry. The draws have been completed and can be found on the following link 2021 JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The smallest size bowl that was available was a size 00. Drakes Pride now manufacture 000 and 0000 bowls. We’ve purchased 1 x 000 & 2 x 0000 Drakes Pride Conquests with our Prawn Logo for our Junior bowlers.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to Marlene Sharp and Mark Larsen. Marlene & Mark clinched the 2021 Mixed Pairs Championship with a victory over Jan Howe and Wolfram Thiele. 24-13. Well done to our finalists.

In the Semi Final, Marlene and Mark edged out last year’s Winners, Nancye Coltman & Daniel Davies.

Jan & Wolfram accounted for Jim Wolter & Bess Alaban in the other Semi Final.

The 2020 Major Singles is well under way with several washed out rounds causing some rescheduling of the dates.

The 2021 Senior Singles close on the 16th April. Make sure you get your name down if you’re eligible. Play days are normal scheduled on Wednesdays and you must be 65 years or over at the time of the draw.

Our Staff Pairs Championship continues to provide us with a lot of fun and some great bowls played by some of our staff members.  We have 8 games to go before we get to the round of 16. Already matched up is Scott Robertson & Jim Wolter up against Scott Devine & Zoe Davies in game 2 of round 3. Please make sure you aquaint yourself with your team mate and opposition and endeavour to get your matches played.

GEORGE STEWART MEMORIAL SHIELD.

The George Stewart Memorial Shield Day is scheduled for Friday 9th April at 9:30am. Members  from the NSW Police Bowling Club converge on Windang in memory of our esteemed member and coach George Stewart. It’s always a great day and also has a cops & robbers shoot out to find the winners of the shield. A reminder that bowlers are to wear their Club Uniform.

SOCIAL BOWLS

Wednesday and Friday now have a jackpot included. The green fees for these days are $8. $1 towards the jackpot and $7 for green fees. A random margin is drawn at the end of the game. If a rink (or rinks) have this margin, they all share the jackpot. At this stage the jackpot has only accumulated twice on either day so we may have a look at a different way to draw the jackpot. This will be brought up at the next Board Meeting.

Saturday Social Bowls during pennants will commence at 10:30am. Entries will be single names and prizes are out of the hat.  This is only during the pennant season and should return to normal at completion of pennants. Once it does return to normal, a jackpot will be considered. A reminder that we have volunteers helping us manage our social bowls on a Saturday. They give up their time so we can concentrate on our pennants without too many distractions.

Please don’t take any of your frustrations out on them. If you think you can do better, please raise your hand to help.
