2021 Pennants Round 1 Update

A shaky start to the season for Windang in Round 1 Pennants.

At home we had Grade 2 up against Thirroul, Grade 4 against Towradgi and Grade 7 against Warilla.

Grade 3 away at Towradgi, Grade 5 down south at Bomaderry and Grade 6 at Dapto Citizens.

Highlights

  • The only side to come out with a win were the 7’s just edging out Warilla by 1 shot on the master board with a score of 59-58. Phil Cable’s team of Doug Allen, Graham Lawer and Bob Burton scoring well 31 – 9 and winning 15 ends, to maintain the Masterboard. Well done to the 7’s!
  • In the 2’s – Gregg Steven’s team of Pete Grogan, Steve Sprod & Grant Burbidge winning 15 ends 27-15 for the rink win.
  • Mal Pearson’s Team of Paul Nesbitt, Ari Jarvin & Wolfe Thiele picking up the rink win with a score of 24-11, winning 14 ends.
  • In the 4’s, Pete Sturm’s team of Matt Grogan, Bob Page & Danny Johnson worked hard for a 21-19 win picking up 1 rink point. Worth a mention is Bill Barden’s team of Nicolle Grogan, Jim Wolter and Rob Jordan picking up an 8 on the 18th end.
  • Down at Bomaderry, the stand out team in the 5’s was Daryl Davidson, Graham Taylor, Dave Stojcevski and Skip Bob Driscoll winning 33-22.
  • The fast greens at Dapto Citizen’s proving a problem for our 6’s. Best performed was Ivan Switzer’s team of Don Lowe, Les Robbo and Kenny Sawers hanging on for a draw at 18 all for half a point.

Considerations

3 of our grades only went down by 5 or 6 on the master board.

Managing losses is important. Keeping a team’s losses to 2 shots or less helps maintain the master board.

An example of this appears below from round 1.

  • Side A lost by 5 shots on the master board.
  • Analysing the game, the total number of ends lost by the side that were more than 2 shots = 9 ends.
  • Total Shot Count lost = 34 shots (3,5,3)+(4,4,4,3)+(3,5).
  • Total shot count if keeping those 9 ends to 2 or less = 18 shots (or less). Even minimising all these ends to 3 shots would take 7 shots off the opposition.

If the side managed their losses better, it would be a much better outcome on the Master Board.

Managing shot losses is basically, having an overall awareness of the head. Not being greedy, and expecting the unexpected. If something can go wrong, there’s a big chance it will!

Never underestimate your opposition – Visualise what you would play if you were in their shoes and always expect that the opposition is quite capable of playing the same shot.
