Bowls Update March 2024

Three Singles Championships were decided over the last week, with the Men’s Major Singles, Men’s Minor Singles and Women’s Minor Singles all completed. One more Singles event remains with the Senior Singles down to the quarter final stage.

2023-2024 MEN’S MAJOR SINGLES

The Men’s Major Singles Finalists were Gregg Stevens and Dave Tyrrell. Paul Cable, the 2022-2023 Singles Winner was marker for the match. The Competition commenced with 35 starters, all looking to claim the title for the 2023-2024 season. Gregg Stevens showed his experience with wins over Jim Kambouris, Daniel Ellem, John Penno and edging out Daniel Doyle 25-17 in the S/F. Dave Tyrrell got off to a dominant start in the competition, only dropping a combined total of 7 shots in his first two games. Accounting for Phil Cable in the Q/F’s, and getting the better of Garry Burke 25-20 in the S/F.

In the final, Gregg Stevens started well winning the first four ends to get out to an early lead 8-0. By the 14th end the scores were locked at 12 all. Dave dominated the second half finishing, with 10 unanswered shots in the last four ends to take out the title 25-16.

2023-2024 MEN’S MINOR SINGLES

The Men’s Minor Singles Championship commenced with 36 entrants. The Final consisted of Stuart Tyrrell facing off against Paul Fitzpatrick with last years Runner Up, John Hull marking. On the road to the final, Stuart Tyrrell accounted for Mark Schodde 25-13, Ron Wood 25-20, Don Lowe 25-12, and Peter Jones in the S/F 25-20. Paul Fitzpatrick’s run included Craig Burnett 25-7, Ed Aschenwald 25-24, Rick Montgomery 25-20 and Garry Kime 25-17 in the Semi.

The game lasted 30 ends with Paul Fitz getting out to an early lead 8-3 on end 7. Paul maintained the lead for for the majority of the game until the scores were locked at 18 all on end 23. The players were going shot for shot on the last 7 ends with the scores at 21 all, and 24 all. Stuart Tyrrell hung onto 1 shot to get over the line and take out the 2023-2024 Championship. 2023-2024 WOMEN’S MINOR SINGLES

The Women’s Minor Singles commenced with 8 entrants, with Zoe Davies up against Kerrie Taylor in the final. Last year’s winner Judith Voltz was marker for the match.

Zoe Davies’ road to the final included victories over Robyn Burke 25-5 and Carol Swan 25-10.
Kerrie Taylor accounted for Ashlee Priestley 25-15 and Julie Fitzsimmons 25-3.
Both players got off to an even start but Kerrie Taylor showed her experience and dominated the rest of the match to take out the title 25-10. Congratulations to our finalists and to our 2023-2024 Women’s Minor Singles Champion Kerrie Taylor.
